Sister Anne, Shepard Fairey and the joke nobody got…

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

So, one night about a year ago some friends and I had this great idea to promote the Sister Anne cartoon. We were going to spoof Shepard Fairey…

Now most of you are asking yourselves WHO is Shepard Fairey, which is EXACTLY where this joke goes wrong! When I’m explaining it to somebody I start with “Obey the Giant”, the original street art that Fairey did back in the 80’s, then I explain how he was sued by WWF and Vince McMahon over the use of Andre the Giant’s likeness and the words “the Giant”.

Then I mention the incredibly successful clothing line he has out now. This usually engenders a blank stare and a perfunctory smile of complete incomprehension.

THEN I say “he’s the one that did the Hope poster of Obama”, at which point they generally go “Ohhh, yeah. I know that poster!” which, again, is why our “genius” viral marketing plan for promoting Sister Anne went nowhere. If you need to EXPLAIN the joke it doesn’t work.

Shepard Fairey is a personal art hero of mine. I have followed him enviously since art school. I love his style, his message and his execution. That’s why, when we came up with this idea over some wine one night, I thought it was hilarious. First we would make posters in the style of Shepard Fairey. Then we would put them up online. Then we would post all over the internet and send people to the download page and “encourage” them to put the poster up in huge poster walls and other creative ways and take picture of it and send them to us. Once people started sending us photos of their poster walls we would put them up online along with some joke ones. We were going to photoshop the poster on the wall between Israel and Palestine with a blurb about peace breaking out amidst mass confusion. We were going to fake a shot of the pope holding one up to promote it. We were going to photoshop one on George Clooney’s back. THEN once the viral campaign had reached a fever pitch we were going to pretend that Shepard Fairey was suing us. If you do know his work and career you’ll see the humor of this. For everyone else the reason this would be ironically hilarious is because he started his career being sued by Vince McMahon king of professional wrestling and has been in court pretty much continuously ever since. Most recently with the Associated Press over the image he used as the pose for the Hope poster, which they claim to own. I actually wanted to use this phase as an excuse to contact Shepard Fairey to see if he would be willing to play along and pretend he was pissed off at us.

I thought this was a great idea but a joke you need to explain doesn’t work, and an inside joke that a handful of people get doesn’t make for a viral promotional campaign that impacts popular culture in a meaningful way. That said, here is the poster:

And the link to the page where you can download it:

There is also the original joke post still up on the page. If you do decide to plaster them up all over your hometown (and of course I, as the management of this site, am in no way encouraging you to do so) please do send us pictures of your completely independent efforts.

THANKS!!

PS: here’s a link to Shepard Fairey’s site. It is WELL worth visiting, bookmarking, and returning to regularly. I love this guy!

Sister Anne – FUND THE NUN!!! launches on Kickstarter – let the FUNding begin!!!!

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Today Sin has a new reason to Fear, today EVIL crawls a little farther back into the shadows. Today we launch SISTER ANNE!! Follow us to the Sister Anne kickstarter project FUND THE NUN!!!

Today we launch our Kickstarter project. You can track the progress toward funding this awesome onslaught of animated goodness here and soon when we have some backers there will be an exclusive webpage just for them chock-full of exclusive content and exclusive updates… all VERY exclusive! Join the elite sin fighters there by backing our project at any level.

Meanwhile here is some more art from our huge pile of development materials. A shot of SA from the upcoming ash can Sister Anne #0, and a panel featuring her arch foes Wrath AKA Anger – the leader of the Seven Deadly Sins and his ally the great demon Vanity AKA Pride. Apparently these are two of the LESS offensive designs we have in the Seven Deadly Sins design pack (according to my highly scientific focus group poll of random people, who happened to wander by me in various different locations where I have been feverishly working on the new art for the demo and kickstarter project and said “Hey, Whatcha doin’?”) I will be conducting a much MORE scientific poll amongst the backers and fans on what they think of the character designs, scripts and various other parts of this show. We HAVE been to the networks (we still have their email addresses and we DO know where they live and will be pestering them no end when we finally have some animation to show!) and some of our content has met with less than enthusiastic response. Now WE think it’s hilarious and so does my friend Pat, but SOME people seem to find certain aspects disturbing  (not necessarily a bad thing). We would like as many people to see and enjoy our show as possible. We do NOT want to sacrifice the integrity and intent of the show. It is quite a tightrope to walk and we do want the help of our fans. To that end we would like your comments here as we post designs and show ideas. Let us know if you the potential viewers find them awesome, offensive, or awesomely offensive!

We will be posting a full overview of the SA universe here over the coming weeks. If there are any specific questions you have about any aspect of her mighty goodness and her mighty holy mission or any other aspect of her world you can ask them here.

Thanks for stopping by. Please check back for updates and new art.

Paying the Bills pt.2

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

And yet another project for Adidas branded come to a successful conclusion. This project was briefed as a skull graphic that was to be “edgy” and have “attitude” ( which are of course meaningless and over used buzz words in the marketing sector ). I started in on the skulls and they were coming out fairly well when I hit the wall and couldn’t find a way to really finish them to my own satisfaction. So there I was with a skull on my screen and no idea where to go. So what did I do? A spawn cover of course!

What’s the good of a skull if you can’t do a good horror piece with it. The best part is the higher ups liked the spawn so well they encouraged me to go the same direction with the edgy, attitudinal skull graphic for Adidas you see here. Which leads me to the point I’m making here. Fun and engagement with your subject invariably yields the BEST CREATIVE RESULTS. It is the essence of creativity. And while I often find it necessary to crank out the work as best I can in a professional manner when I DO get to work one something which allows me to engage and play and experiment it …

It makes life a little better. I hope you like these as much as I liked doing them.
